An elderly couple were brutally murdered in a frenzied axe-attack at their Summerstrand home in Port Elizabeth. The pair were believed to both be in their seventies.
They were hacked to death at some point between Sunday evening and the early hours of Monday morning. The couple – identified as Andre and Lydia Saaiman – were discovered earlier today in their Scott Street home by a visiting handyman.
Port Elizabeth ‘rocked’ by axe murders
Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer Alwin Labans confirmed the gruesome discovery earlier today, revealing that the man had the heartbreaking task of contacting the couples’ daughter. She arrived at the house and was able to contact the police, alongside her husband.
Labans gave a statement to the media a little while ago, and revealed the horrifying ordeal that the attacker(s) had put the Saaimans through:
“The police kicked down one of the doors. It was then they found the husband and wife tied up in the study. They both had open wounds to the head.”
Laban also went on to describe the state the murderer(s) had left the house in, confirming that there was no attempt to even hide the axe, which was found laying next to the bodies of the slain couple. The house had also been ‘ransacked’.
Murder investigation gets underway
The Police Spokesperson also went on to confirm that CCTV footage from outside their home will be used in the investigation. The police have already began following their leads, and this could be the most crucial evidence available to them
Andre and Lydia lived on a street where rented units neighboured them towards the back. These student houses were home to the last people who saw them alive. The student residents last reported seeing the couple on Saturday afternoon. The killing has rocked the community, and it’ll no doubt hurt all South Africans. It is a murder as senseless as it is violent, and our thoughts are with the Saaiman family.
