The Equal Education group will descend on Parliament later this afternoon, in a bid to force local authorities to step up their fight against crime.
EE are particularly concerned about the welfare of children in the Western Cape, where seven of the country’s top ten murder spots are based. It’s both a serious threat to life, and education of The Cape’s children.
The group sent a letter of notice to WC Education Minister Debbie Schafer, explaining their reasons for the protest. She explained that children being exposed to violence is now just a ‘part of their life’, and that something has to change drastically.

“poverty, inequality, unemployment, systemic failures in resource allocation as well as a [lack of] political will at provincial level. These are all to blame for the deepening safety crisis.”
“Therefore, we request your [Debbie Schafer’s] presence on Friday 27th October. from 16:00 – 17:00. You shall receive our memorandum at Parliament, so we can make the voices of learners, teachers, parents and communities heard.”

Gang violence in Western Cape Schools

Two learners have been killed in the Western Cape in the last two weeks, according to Equal Education. The separate incidents (in Delft and Nyanga) have brought gang turf wars into local schools, creating a nightmare scenario for the community.
Minister Schafer has since responded to the notice. She assured the residents that her department were doing everything they could to prevent these crimes. However, she did acknowledge the depths of their concerns.
the National Anti-Gangsterism Strategy, as drafted by the National Intelligence Coordinating Committee… is being fully supported by the Western Cape.
I am under no illusion that the fight against the gangs is hindered by our severely under-resourced police stations. I am really appreciative of the commitment and drive by all these role-players to try and protect our youth.
These engagements have sought to improve safety in and around schools and to support our youth. However, much  more must still be done.

Equal Education to turn up in numbers

Equal Education will be supported by the Nyanga Community Police Forum, the National Professional Teachers Organisation of SA. They will also be flanked by21 other movements affiliated to the #UniteBehind campaign.
