Well… insert your eye emoji here. The Financial Times reports that the FBI has begun an investigation into US links to the Guptas. The FBI is using information from the #GuptaLeaks emails, the FT reported.
According to media reports, the FBI’s investigation will focus on Ashish and Amol Gupta – both US citizens. They are the nephews of Atul and Ajay Gupta. The nephews’ company received payments from a Dubai-based, SA Gupta-linked company, the FT said, quoting people familiar with the matter.
And that’s not the only overseas entity interested in the Guptas’ goings on.
FT said in a separate report that Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond said that he had passed on concerns from Peter Hain, a former Labour cabinet minister, that two London-based banks  – HSBC and Standard Chartered – might have handled illicit funds linked to the family via Hong Kong and Dubai.
The Financial Times says that Hain does not explicitly say that the two banks did anything wrong. However, he suggests that transactions and evidence from whistleblowers are reviewed in light of allegations that hundreds of millions of South African rand were laundered out of the country.
Bloomberg reported that the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK was “already in contact with both banks named and will consider carefully further responses received.”
Spokespeople for HSBC and Standard Chartered declined to comment.
